Grant Summary

The Wine Tourism and Cellar Door Grant provides financial support to wine and cider producers who operate physical cellar doors and contribute to wine tourism across Australia. The grant helps producers offset costs associated with cellar door operations by providing funding based on eligible domestic cellar door sales. Administered by Wine Australia on behalf of the Commonwealth, this demand-driven program is designed to strengthen regional wine tourism and cellar door experiences. This is the seventh round of this grant opportunity.

Grant Amount:
  • Up to $100,000 (GST exclusive) per applicant per year
  • Total program funding is capped at $10 million annually
  • If oversubscribed, grant amounts will be reduced proportionally across all approved applicants

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a wine or cider producer

  • Be a legal entity registered for GST with an active ABN

  • Have made at least $1,207,000 (GST exclusive) in rebatable wine sales in the relevant financial year

  • Have rebatable domestic cellar door sales exceeding those used to meet the $1,207,000 threshold

  • Have paid the Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) on all eligible sales

  • Own or lease a physical cellar door in Australia (or have a related entity that does)

  • Hold a valid liquor licence for the relevant financial year


Eligible Expenses (What Qualifies for Funding)
  • Applicants may claim 29% of the notional wholesale selling price of eligible rebatable domestic cellar door sales

  • At least 50% of sales claimed must be from the physical cellar door

  • Sales must occur during the period the producer (or related entity) owned or leased the cellar door

  • Only one application per financial year is allowed per group of associated producers

The EMDG is an Australian Government initiative that helps businesses expand into international markets by funding up to 50% of eligible export promotion expenses.

Significant changes were introduced in the recently closed Round 4, including a shift to a “first in, first served” application process, with a limited budget and reduced timeframe. Round 4 opened in November 2024 and closed within a number of hours/days depending on the tier that was applied for. Round 4 entitles successful applicants with a grant between $30,000-$80,000 per financial year for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 FYs. The next round of the EMDG will not open until late 2026. There is currently no further information at this stage.

EMDG Grant Summary

Grant Amounts:

Tier 1 (min. $100,000 revenue for the 2023-24 FY):
Up to $30,000 per financial year for up to 2 years

 

Tier 2 (min. $500,000 revenue for the 2023-24 FY):
Up to $50,000 per financial year for up to 2 years

Tier 3 (min. $1,000,000 revenue for the 2023-24 FY):
Up to $80,000 per financial year for up to 2 years

Grant amounts are for the 2025-25 and 2026-27 FYs; no funding is available for the 2023-24 FY. The total grant amounts will be subject to available funds and the overall demand for the grant.

Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must:

  • Have a valid ABN operational for at least 2 years
  • Own the Intellectual Property (IP) or have the rights to sell the product/service
  • Have an assessable income of less than $20 million (for the 2023-24 FY)
  • Prove it has the capacity to spend at least $20,000 per financial year
  • Be tax-compliant and fit to receive a grant
  • Tier 3 applicants must target specific countries
  • Be exporting or promoting at least one of the following to overseas buyers:
    • Goods made in Australia
    • Goods made outside Australia where Australia could derive a significant net benefit
    • An Australian tourism service
    • Intellectual property generated from work done in Australia
    • A trademark owned, assigned, or first used in Australia
    • Know-how from work mainly done in Australia
    • An event held in Australia

Eligible Expenses:

  • Maintaining a representative in a foreign country (e.g. engaging an international representative in a foreign country for a minimum of 6 months to conduct market research or promotional activities of your product/service)
  • Short trips to a foreign country (e.g. economy airfares, accommodation, food and ground transport for up to 21 days of an overseas trip for you or a company representative)
  • Consultants (e.g. engagement of a consultant to conduct market research or promotional activities of your product/service in a foreign country)
  • Short trips within Australia (e.g. food, accommodation and transport related to marketing your eligible product to potential foreign buyers)
  • Foreign buyer visits to Australia (e.g. paying for the economy airfares, accommodation, food & other incidentals for a prospective foreign buyer visiting Australia)
  • Soliciting for business in a foreign country (e.g. exhibiting at an international trade show)
  • Free samples (e.g. costs incurred to send sample products overseas)
  • Promotional and advertising material (e.g. Facebook/Instagram/TikTok/Google Ads advertising expenses in an overseas market such as the United States)
  • Intellectual property rights (e.g. the registration of patents or trademarks in foreign countries)
  • Training activities – Tier 1 applicants and representative bodies only (e.g. training of staff to better market goods/services in foreign countries)
